Silver

Chasing, carving, camphor

The «endova» vessel was made on an order of boyard Vassili Streshnev who headed gold and silver workshops of Russia in 1630–1638. Mead, beer and kwass were drunk from such vessels.

The silver body of the «endova» is covered with chased «spoon» decoration. Sequence of smooth and ornamented «spoons» gives the vessel its exclusive dynamism.

По дипломатическому этикету, приезжая в Московию, иностранные послы подносили царю подарки. Уже в XV–XVI веках в царской казне формируется замечательная коллекция западноевропейского серебра.

Особенным спросом при царском дворе пользовались изделия немецких мастеров. Замечательной работой XV века является кубок для вина — «кур» — так называли его в старинных летописях. Эмалевая надпись на крышке сосуда говорит о том, что принадлежал кубок московскому князю Ивану III.

According to the rules of diplomatic etiquette, foreign envoys on coming to Moscovy presented the Tsar with their gifts. As far as in the XV–XVI centuries, a wonderful collection of West European silver came to existence within the Tsar's treasury. Production of German craftsmen was in the great request at the Russian Court. The wine goblet, called «cock» in the ancient manuscripts, is a splendid artwork from the XV century. An enamel inscription on the cover of the vessel indicates that the goblet was made for Ivan III, the Grand Prince of Moscow.

Выполнена табакерка одним из лучших мастеров эпохи классицизма Жоржем Адором. Миниатюра, портрет Екатерины II, работы датского художника К. Гейера. Изящная рамка, обрамляющая портрет, украшена травным эмалевым орнаментом и белыми эмалевыми шариками, имитирующими драгоценные опалы. Изысканность декора и колорита, глубокое чувство пропорций характерны для этого произведения русского классицизма.

Gold, enamel

The snuff box produced by Georges Ador, one of the best jewelers of the era of classicism. The miniature portrait of Catherine the Great was painted by a Danish artist K. Geyer. An elegant frame of the portrait is decorated with an enamel grass ornamentation and white enamel beads imitating precious opals. Refinement of decor and colour together with deep feeling of proportions characterize this magnificent work of Russian classicism.
