Эффект раздела фаз на границе этих структур с кровью вызывает отражение ультразвукового луча, регистрируемое датчиком в период, когда он работает в качестве приемника сигналов. Давление, оказываемое ультразвуком на пьезоэлектрический элемент датчика, преобразуется в электрические сигналы, регистрируемые на экране осциллоскопа (экране эхокардиографа) по мере их поступления. В А-модальном режиме (A-mode) интенсивность принятых эхо-сигналов представлена в виде электрических импульсов различной амплитуды. В В-модальном режиме интенсивность эхо-сигналов представлена в виде яркости свечения отдельных точек. А-модальный и В-модальный режимы представляют интенсивность эхо-сигналов в реальном времени. Развертка В-модального режима по времени превращается в М-модальный режим. Внизу: различные способы получения двумерного изображения сердца. Ультразвуковой луч перемещается (сканирует) в пределах сектора, создавая изображение сердца в реальном времени. Режим двумерного изображения сердца является развитием В-модального режима: интенсивность принятых эхо-сигналов соответствует яркости точек. В датчике с фазово-кристаллической решеткой (Phased Array) сканирование достигается последовательным возбуждением кристаллов, имеющих относительно малый диаметр. В механическом датчике (Mechanical Rotation) электрический мотор вращает три или четыре датчика для М-модального исследования мимо окна, граничащего с поверхностью грудной клетки. Работа осциллирующих датчиков (Oscillation) основана на колебании одного пьезоэлектрического элемента. В линейных датчиках (Multicristal) пьезоэлектрические элементы выстроены в один ряд и посылают параллельно направленные ультразвуковые лучи, поэтому изображение и исследуемые объекты имеют одинаковые размеры.
