Listen to the tape-recorded text and then retell the contents in your own words.

Part 11. Prelubrication

Prelubrication of a diesel engine implies that a stationary engine is lubricated by a separate electric motor-driven pump for a certain period of time and at certain intervals, e. g. 1 min every hour. This arrangement ensures that an oil film will be formed in the bearings and this oil will be sufficient for starting the diesel engine until its own directly-driven lubricating system is operative. The function is monitored by sensing, by means of a pressure switch designed for that purpose, that a certain lubricating oil pressure has been attained. If not, a “prelubrication alarm” will be initiated and starting of the set will be blocked.

20 3

Fulfil or explain the following:

1. Name the manual operations in UER.

2. Explain what occurs in the event of a serious fault on one set.

3. List main functions of the system (ex. 17).

21 6

Record your answers on a tape.

1. What is the purpose of the automatic control equipment?

2. What are in your opinion advantages of the system?

3. What functions is the system designed for?

22 7

Dwell with your fellow-student on automatic control system for ships electrical power plant. Use ex. 20, 21. Then record your talk on a tape.

23 12

Practice pronunciation. Open your books and repeat after the speaker in pauses paragraph 1 of the recorded text “Automatic Control System for Ships Electrical Power Plant”. Then close your books and do the same with paragraphs 2—4.

While listening to the recorded text make a flow chart of working conditions on board multipurpose ship. Then dwell on the subject with your fellow-student. Your flow chart will help you.

Work on Board Multipurpose Ship

I have been in charge of machinery on Pielstick-equipped ships for the last eleven years, most of time on banana boats.

When some people compare the medium-speed engines to slow-speed ones, they think there is so much more work to be done on the medium speeds. In a way they are right, but I think the main difference is the kind of work that is required.

With the medium-speed engine you have to have much closer contact with the manufacturer in the beginning. You have to know the characte-
