Открытие природы альфа-лучей позволило утверждать следующее:

Процесс дезинтеграции проходит уровень за уровнем за измеримые для каждого случая промежутки времени".
Альфа- и бета-излучение, открытые Резерфордом ранее, понимались теперь как следствие внутренней дезинтеграции материи, основополагающей нестабильности атомов радиоактивных элементов. Их стали рассматривать не как излучение, а как частицы, "убегавшие" из атомов, менявшие структуру и природу этих атомов. Происходила спонтанная трансмутация атомов из одного элемента в другой.

Резерфорд и Содди ввели новые термины для этих элементов: "родительскими" они называли радиоактивные элементы, и "дочерними" — атомы после трансформации и распада.
РАДИОАКТИВНЫЕ СЕМЕЙСТВА
Открытия, сделанные на тот период, позволяли составить общее мнение о радиации. Радиоактивные материалы существовали с момента формирования Земли. Такие элементы, как торий и уран, на самом деле не высокорадиоактивны, то есть они не очень стабильны по сравнению с другими радиоактивными элементами, время их распада продолжительнее. Однако в ходе их дезинтеграции возникали другие значительно более активные вещества. Дезинтеграция происходила естественным путем, это было случайное явление, определить количественные характеристики которого можно только статистическим путем. При испускании альфа-частиц, то есть ядер гелия, первоначальный атом уже не существовал как тот же элемент, на его месте формировалось новое, менее стабильное вещество, как правило, имевшее большую радиоактивность. Годы спустя выяснилось, что бета-излучение также является следствием фундаментальных трансформаций атома, а точнее его ядра, так как электроны и излучение появляются, когда нейтрон распадается на один протон и один электрон, но на том этапе Резерфорд еще не открыл внутреннее строение атома.
