Just then the hyena stopped whimpering in the night (как раз в эту минуту гиена перестала скулить в ночи; to whimper — хныкать, ныть; скулить) and started to make a strange, human, almost crying sound (и начала издавать /какой-то/ странный, человеческий звук, похожий на плач: «почти плачущий звук»). The woman heard it and stirred uneasily She did not wake In her dream she was at the house on Long Island (во сне она была в доме на Лонг-Айленде[25]) and it was the night before her daughter's debut (и это был вечер накануне первого выезда в свет ее дочери; debut — дебют; первое выступление; первый выезд в свет). Somehow her father was there (почему-то ее отец оказался там же) and he had been very rude (и он был очень груб). Then the noise the hyena made was so loud she woke (потом звук, издаваемый гиеной, стал так громок, что она проснулась) and for a moment she did not know where she was (и в первую минуту не знала, где она) and she was very afraid (и ей было очень страшно). Then she took the flashlight (потом она взяла фонарик) and shone it on the other cot (и посветила им на другую койку) that they had carried in after Harry had gone to sleep (которую внесли, после того как Гарри уснул). She could see his bulk under the mosquito bar (она увидела его очертания под москитной сеткой; bulk — груда, кипа; масса; тело; bar — брусок; mosquito bar — конструкция из противомоскитной сетки, имеющая в натянутом виде форму параллелепипеда) but somehow he had gotten his leg out (но ногу он почему-то выставил наружу) and it hung down alongside the cot (и она свисала вдоль койки). The dressings had all come down (все повязки сползли) and she could not look at it (и она = женщина не могла на нее смотреть).

"Molo," she called (позвала она), "Molo! Molo!"

Then she said, "Harry, Harry!" Then her voice rising Please, Oh Harry!"

There was no answer (ответа не было) and she could not hear him breathing (и она не слышала его дыхания).

Outside the tent the hyena made the same strange noise that had awakened her But she did not hear him for the beating of her heart
