Эти останки прошлого ныне существуют как часть настоящего. Городу по самой природе его свойственно содержать в себе все. Поэтому, когда спрашивают, как может Лондон быть городом-триумфатором при таком обилии бедных и бездомных, в ответ можно лишь высказать предположение, что и они всегда составляли часть городской истории. Возможно, они — часть лондонского триумфа. Эти слова, при всей их суровости, лишь отражают суровость самого Лондона. Он выходит за любые рамки, нарушает любые правила. Он заключает в себе каждое желание или мнение, когда-либо высказанное, каждое телодвижение или действие, когда-либо совершенное, каждое грубое или благородное чувство, когда-либо нашедшее выражение. Он не имеет границ. Это — Бесконечный Лондон.
